  33. WHAT IS SERALINE SCREENSAVER (SSS)
  34. ----------------------------------
  35.  
  36. Seraline Screensaver is a screensaver for Windows. It creates an endless
  37. variety of colorful abstract images by combining a wealth of drawing
  38. elements.
  39.  
  40. Sometimes it takes a while to generate something interesting, so please give
  41. it a few goes and let it run for a while if it is not initially appealing. You
  42. can move it along by pressing 'f', or press 'c' to restart it.

  44. Supports 16 color VGA, 256 color SVGA, 24-bit color.

  47. INSTALLATION
  48. ------------
  49.  
  50. Windows 3.1
  51.  
  52. 1. Copy the file seraline.scr into your windows directory, usually c:\windows.
  53.  
  54. 2. Run Control Panel from the Main group in Program Manager.
  55.  
  56. 3. Double click on the Desktop icon.
  57.  
  58. 4. In the Screen Saver Section, under Name, select Seraline.
  59.  
  60. 5. Press Test to run the screensaver.
  61.  
  62. 6. Press Setup to display registration and support details, and access
  63.    configuration options.

  66. Windows 95
  67.  
  68. 1. Copy the file seraline.scr into your windows\system directory, usually
  69.    c:\windows\system.
  70.  
  71. 2. Click on Start, then Settings, then Control Panel.
  72.  
  73. 3. Double click on the Display icon.
  74.  
  75. 4. Click on the Screensaver tab.
  76.  
  77. 5. In the Screen Saver list, select Seraline.
  78.  
  79. 6. Click Preview to run the screensaver.
  80.  
  81. 7. Press Setup to display registration and support details, and access
  82.    configuration options.

  85. SETUP OPTIONS
  86. -------------
  87.  
  88. Configuration options are available from the Control Panel/Desktop/Setup
  89. screen by pressing the Options button.
  90.  
  91. Available options:
  92.  
  93. HIDE MOUSE
  94.     Selecting this option means the mouse cursor will disappear while the
  95.     screensaver is running.
  96.  
  97. SPEED
  98.     1    Slow Mode - only the slower drawings are used, making it less
  99.      distracting if you are trying to work next to the computer.
  100.  
  101.     2    Normal speed - uses all drawings.
  102.  
  103.     3    Fast Mode - uses just the faster drawings,
  104.          making it more watchable.
  105.  
  106.  
  107. TEXT MESSAGES
  108.     You can have your own messages periodically displayed by entering a
  109.     series of phrases, each separated by a semi-colon, such as "text=My
  110.     message;Second message;Third;fourth". The messages are displayed at
  111.     random, and not necessarily immediately or every run.
  112.  
  113. Note that for the unregistered version, the above options only apply to the
  114. very next run of SSS, and then they are cleared.
  115.  
  116. SAFE MODE
  117.     Select this option if SSS occasionally crashes with a General
  118.     Protection Fault. When selected, SSS will avoid graphics which have
  119.     caused problems with some video drivers.
  120.

  122. PASSWORD PROTECTION
  123. -------------------
  124.     Password protection is only available for Windows 3.1, because under
  125.     Windows 95, Control+Alt+Delete allows SSS to be cancelled.
  126.  
  127.     Warning: the security of your machine is not guaranteed when using the SSS
  128.     password protection because due to the complexity of the screensaver and
  129.     different machine configurations, there is the possibility that SSS may
  130.     crash and leave your machine available.
  131.

  133. RUNTIME OPTIONS
  134. ---------------
  135.  
  136. While the screensaver is running, the following keys can be used:
  137.  
  138. 1,2,3    Selects the speed, as described above under Setup Options.
  139.  
  140. c    The Colors being used will be changed and the screen cleared.
  141.  
  142. f    The current drawing will Finish. Useful if it appears to be stuck or you
  143.      want it to move on.
  144.  
  145. h,H  For users whose mouse doesn't disappear, possibly because some other
  146.      program has left the internal Windows mouse counter too high, pressing
  147.      'h' decrements the counter. When it reaches zero, the mouse disappears.
  148.      'H' increments it. (Registered version only)
  149.  
  150. k    Keeps running with the current colors, & avoids clearing the screen so
  151.      that the image builds on itself as much as possible. (Registered version
  152.      only)
  153.  
  154. o    Displays an order form, which can be printed (Unregistered version only).
  155.  
  156. p    Pressing p will cause SSS pause at the end of the current drawing,
  157.      and not continue until you press 'p' again. This is useful for those
  158.      times SSS takes a long while to draw something you want to see, but then
  159.      it wipes it immediately. Or you wish to leave the rrom for a while but
  160.      still want to see how it ends up.  By pausing, the drawing will remain on
  161.      the screen until you restart SSS by pressing 'p'.  (Registered version
  162.      only)

  165. IMAGEVOTE (Registered Version Only)
  166. ---------
  167.  
  168. Press the following keys while SSS is running to bias SSS towards images you
  169. prefer:
  170.  
  171. F4   Press F4 to vote FOR an image you like.
  172.  
  173. F5   Press F5 to vote AGAINST an image you like.
  174.  
  175. Shift+F5 resets to the system defaults.
  176.  
  177. Voting is a gradual process - it provides a general guideline only to SSS,
  178. such as more or less text, faster or slower drawings. Colors are not included
  179. in the voting. SSS keeps track of the last few drawings done, and votes are
  180. allocated with the later drawings receiving (or losing) more votes.  So at
  181. times you may be voting for something you may at other times be voting
  182. against, but over time, it is expected that the items you prefer will become
  183. more prominent.

  186. DISPLAYING BITMAPS (Registered Version Only)
  187. ------------------
  188.  
  189. Bitmap files created with PaintBrush, or other paint programs, can be
  190. displayed periodically by SSS, and then they are merged and colored with
  191. the other graphics. For example, you can have your company logo or other
  192. advertising material displayed, or perhaps a multi-line name & address which
  193. is too long for the message-display option.
  194.  
  195. The Options screen contains a button which brings up a Bitmap entry screen,
  196. which lets you enter the name of a disk directory. Any bitmap files in that
  197. directory will be displayed at random. Only files with the extension ".bmp"
  198. are shown.
  199.  
  200. When running in 256 color mode, the bitmaps will be displayed using the colors
  201. SSS is using at the time, and may appear quite different to the original.  To
  202. display the bitmaps using their own colors, you must run in 32K, 64K or 16M
  203. color mode.

  205. The bitmap screen also has an option called "Show Often". This will cause
  206. SSS to use the bitmaps in every run.

  210. REGISTRATION & BENEFITS
  211. -----------------------
  212.  
  213. Seraline Screensaver is "try before you buy" software, and is provided with a
  214. free 14-day evaluation period.
  215.  
  216. When you register SSS, it will
  217.     * display its full range of graphics over time
  218.     * allow the use of run-time keystroke options listed above
  219.     * allow password protection (Windows 3.1 only)
  220.     * save your Setup Options, including your own text messages
  221.     * use ImageVote to bias SSS towards images you like
  222.     * allow you to display your own bitmaps, such as logos
  223.     * remove registration reminder messages...
  224.  
  225. The screensaver occasionally displays registration reminder messages like
  226. "Please register SSS".  On receipt of your registration fee, you will be
  227. mailed, faxed or emailed a code which will remove these messages. This
  228. registration code is entered into the Registration field on the Setup screen.
  229.  
  230. Your support through registration is appreciated and will encourage the
  231. development of additional graphics, features and products.

  255. A printable order form in MS Write format is in the file order.wri. An order
  256. form can also be displayed and printed from the Control Panel Setup screen, or
  257. by pressing 'o' while SSS is running.

  261. Alternatively, you may register SSS on-line on Compuserve. After logging
  262. on to Compuserve, enter GO SWREG, and request ID 4667.

  264. In order to keep the cost of SSS low, diskettes are not mailed as part of
  265. the base registration.  The latest version is available on various on-line
  266. services as described below.

  268. These prices and conditions are valid until 31st January 1997 for this version,
  269. and are subject to change with future versions.

  271. If you have already paid a fee to others (eg disk or CD vendors) to obtain
  272. this evaluation copy, that fee was for their copying and distribution
  273. services, rather than a payment for continued use of the program, and the
  274. software author does not receive any part of that fee.

  277. CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS
  278. --------------------

  280. Credit card payments may be made using VISA, Mastercard, or Australian
  281. Bankcard. A printable order form in MS Write format is in the file order.wri,
  282. which can then be faxed or mailed to Seraline. An order form can also be
  283. printed from the Control Panel Setup screen, or by pressing 'o' while
  284. SSS is running.  The details required are Credit Card type, card number,
  285. card expiry date and your signature.  These details can be mailed, or faxed to
  286. Seraline in Australia +61-2-879-4481.

  288. Note that credit cards are billed at exactly $19.95 Australian. For other
  289. currencies, the amount appearing on your card will depend on the foreign
  290. exchange rate at the time. For example, at rates current in January 1996, this
  291. converts to an amount between US$14 and US$15.
  292.  
  293. We support PGP encryption for sending credit card details via email. To
  294. receive our public key, send an email message to porum@ozemail.com.au with
  295. "send public key" as the subject. On receipt of our key, create a text message
  296. containing your name, credit card type (VISA, Mastercard, or Australian
  297. Bankcard), credit card number and expiry date. Use PGP to encrypt the message,
  298. and email it to porum@ozemail.com.au.

  301. TEMPORARY REGISTRATION
  302. ----------------------
  303.  
  304. Because there can be a delay in sending and processing mail registrations, a
  305. temporary code can be provided by email. When you have mailed your order, you
  306. can also send an email message to porum@ozemail.com.au and a temporary code
  307. which expires will be emailed back to you. When your payment is received, a
  308. full registration code will be sent.

  311. LICENSE
  312. -------

  314. Seraline Screensaver is NOT a public domain program.  It is copyrighted by
  315. Seraline Pty Ltd.  This software and accompanying documentation are protected
  316. by Australian copyright law and also by international treaty provisions.
  317.  
  318. The registration fee will license Seraline Screensaver for use on any
  319. computers in your home, and on one computer at work on which you are the
  320. main user.
  321.  
  322. Seraline Pty Ltd grants you a limited license to use this software for
  323. evaluation purposes for a period not to exceed fourteen days.  If you continue
  324. using this software after the fourteen-day evaluation period, you MUST make a
  325. registration payment to Seraline Pty Ltd.
  326.  
  327. You may not use, copy, rent, lease, sell, modify, decompile, disassemble,
  328. otherwise reverse engineer, or transfer the licensed program except as
  329. provided in this agreement.  Any such unauthorized use shall result in
  330. immediate and automatic termination of this license.

  332. Registered users will be licensed to use, free of charge, any version 3.nn of
  333. SSS, and they will be notified by email of any significant 3.nn updates.
  334. Registered users will also be advised by email when the major upgrade to
  335. version 4 becomes available.

  354. Please note that although SSS is released with no known defects that
  355. cause crashes, because of the extensive calculations and graphics and many
  356. permutations, it may still crash occasionally due to incompatibilities with
  357. video drivers.  You should use the evaluation period to check that SSS
  358. does not cause problems with your system. See KNOWN PROBLEMS below for some
  359. work-arounds. If it crashes each day, there may be an incompatibility,
  360. although this shouldn't cause any other problems apart from stopping the
  361. screensaver.  If it crashes Windows, stop running SSS.

  379. VERSION NUMBER EXPLANATION
  380. --------------------------
  381.  
  382. SSS's version number is in four parts: A.B.C.D
  383.  
  384. A    The major version number - changed for major upgrades. Notification is
  385.      sent by email to registered users.
  386.  
  387. B    Minor version number - changed when there have been significant
  388.      enhancements to the graphics. Email notification sent.
  389.  
  390. C    Minor changes to the graphics. Usually only uploaded to the Web page,
  391.      and no announcement is made.
  392.  
  393. D    Minor changes to the documentation.

  396.  
  397. KNOWN PROBLEMS
  398. --------------
  399.  
  400. Some video drivers seem to get a GP Fault when too much stretching or
  401. shrinking is applied to fonts or images. If you find you get several GP
  402. Faults, then try selecting Safe Mode on the Options screen under Control
  403. Panel/Desktop/Setup. If there are still GP Faults, try adding the line
  404. "fonts=no" to the Seraline Screensaver section in your c:\windows\control.ini,
  405. using Notepad.
  406.  
  407. There is a small chance that SSS may crash and leave you without a mouse
  408. until you restart Windows.  Crashes are unlikely, but there are a lot of
  409. permutations, and the Seraline Screensaver is not guaranteed to never crash.
  410. Should this be a problem, you can have the cursor always displayed by
  411. de-selecting "Hide Mouse Cursor" on the Options screen.
  412.  
  413. Any screensaver as calculation-intensive as SSS may slow down other running
  414. tasks such as printing or faxes. If there is such a problem with printing, you
  415. can try increasing the priority of the printing by running Print Manager from
  416. the Main group in Program Manager, and selecting the menu Options/Background
  417. Printing, and select High priority.
